Bamboo is widely considered a giant variety of grass and does not require re-planting after harvesting. The root system remains in place and growth occurs with each new growing season. In suitable conditions, bamboo has been known to grow at a rate of one metre per day.
The species of bamboo used for sheet and veneer products is a running variety known as Phyllostachys Pubescens,
commonly called Moso bamboo.
The Janka hardness test measures the force required to embed an 11.28 mm diameter steel ball halfway
into a sample of material, to determine resistance to denting and wear.
LETObamboo has conducted limited testing with exterior products so cannot make any recommendations.
If you choose to use bamboo outdoors it is suggested you only use a product suitable for exterior use and ensure ALL faces are fully sealed.
Apply and maintain your choice of finish according to manufacturer’s instructions.

As a designer of joinery, specialising in kitchen design, I became aware of my responsibility to contribute toward the protection of timber reserves. Coupled with this, was a desire to create joinery using an alternative material to the ‘business as usual’ offerings.
Bamboo became of interest to me. Considered a variety of grass, its inherent qualities held promise of answering my design requirements, especially the solid core advantages, while supporting my objective to help protect dwindling timber reserves.

Bamboo ply is like hardwood in sheet form and can be worked with traditional hand tools as well as modern methods.
The fine, dense grain is ideal for laser etching and detailed printing, and will machine cleanly.
Bamboo veneer for pressing to a substrate; bamboo ply for joinery projects (cabinets, tables, shelves, counter tops etc), wall and ceiling lining/cladding or shopfitting requirements, signage, jewellery, stationery, lights & lamps, chairs, picture framing, desks, doors…
The list is endless!
